Get-Kids-Afloat (GKA)
Endorsed under the Sports Education Programme by Singapore Sports Council.
The SAF Yacht Club’s Get Kids Afloat Programme is an introductory sailing course for children and youth between ages 7 to 15. It is a 4-day introductory sailing course conducted during the school holidays. Besides having fun in learning to sail, participants also get to make many new friends. Sailing is a thinking sport that instills confidence, hones decision-making skills and trains the child’s agility. Many of the Club’s sailors received their head start in sailing through the GKA programme and gone on to pursue their passion for sailing whilst carving sterling achievements in both the local and international arenas.
The course syllabus includes theory and practical lessons related to the rigging of crafts, parts of a craft, points of sail, capsize drill, and more. Crafts used are Optimist, Topper, and Laser Pico determined by the size of the participants. Parents are encouraged to attend a short briefing on Tuesday morning at 9.30am to obtain an overview of the course.
